New Hampshire rules for old computers and the data on them
New Hampshire bans a broad list of electronics, and now lithium-ion batteries, from its landfills and incinerators. There is no manufacturer-funded program, and the state's privacy law sets security duties rather than disposal methods.
Throwing it away
- No one may dispose of electronic devices in a New Hampshire landfill or incinerator. (RSA 149-M:27)
- The list covers computers, monitors, peripherals, printers, TVs, phones, copiers, and fax machines, but not devices built into vehicles, larger industrial or medical equipment, or household appliances. (RSA 149-M:4)
- Since July 1, 2025, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, like those in laptops and phones, are banned too, and households and businesses must recycle them. (NHDES)
Free recycling
- There is no manufacturer-funded program. NHDES points people to transfer stations (fees may apply), haulers, private recyclers, and retail take-back. (NHDES)
Rules for businesses
- CRTs from older TVs and monitors are universal waste, a class of hazardous waste with streamlined handling and recycling rules. (Env-Hw 1100)
The data on it
- The consumer privacy law requires businesses that handle the personal data of at least 35,000 consumers a year (10,000 if they earn more than a quarter of revenue from selling data) to keep reasonable security practices. It does not set disposal methods. (RSA 507-H)
A plain-language summary with the official source for each point, checked September 2026. It is not legal advice. Every drive we take in is erased to NIST 800-88, and the erasure report is yours on request.
