NIST 800-88 Drive Erasure
Every data-bearing device we take in is erased before it is resold. We run it through commercial erasure software to a NIST SP 800-88 profile: we select Purge, and where a drive does not support Purge the software applies Clear with three overwrite passes and records which it used for that drive. The software writes one report per machine, with a section for each drive carrying that drive's serial, the method applied and the result. Ask and we email you the reports for the drives we erased. Every drive is erased, or it is destroyed: nothing data-bearing is resold un-erased. We are not an R2, e-Stewards, NAID AAA or ADISA certified processor and do not issue certificates of destruction; what we hand you is an erasure record from the tool that did the work.
The process
- Serialized intake — every device logged before anything else happens.
- Erase to a NIST 800-88 profile with commercial erasure software, drive by drive, serial by serial.
- The software verifies its own work and records the result. A drive that will not erase is retried with a second tool, and destroyed rather than resold if it still fails.
- One report per machine, with a section for each drive carrying its serial; emailed on request.
