Samsung Enterprise SSD Part Numbers Decoded: PM883 to PM1643a
By the SellUsedRAM bench · Reviewed September 28, 2026 · About SellUsedRAM
A Samsung data center SSD carries one part number that holds the form factor, the drive family, the capacity and the flash inside it. This page shows how to read it, from the SATA PM883 to the SAS PM1643a, and lists the 28 Samsung drives we buy with every number each one goes by and what it pays today.
How the part number reads
Take MZ7LH960HAJR-00005. Samsung's datasheets explain it position by position. MZ marks a Samsung SSD. The third character is the form factor: 7 is a 2.5-inch 7mm SATA drive, Q a 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe drive, 1 an M.2 22110 drive, and I a 2.5-inch SAS drive. The next two characters name the flash type and the controller, which together identify the family: LH is the PM883, L3 the PM893, LB the PM983, and L2 the PM9A3, and on SAS drives MZILT is the PM1643 family. Then come the capacity (480, 960, 1T9 for 1.92TB, 3T8 for 3.84TB, 7T6 for 7.68TB, 15T for 15.36TB), a package letter, the flash generation, and two characters for the NAND stack.
After the dash come a hardware revision, a packing code and a two-digit customer code. The datasheets give -00005 on the PM883 as the general self-encrypting part, -00007 on the PM983 as the general bulk part, and -00A07 as the general part on the PM9A3. One drive can be sold under several suffixes with identical specs, and Samsung does not publish what every suffix means, so match on the part before the dash.
Match all of it, though. Some families differ by a single character: the PM863a (MZ7LM) and the higher-endurance SM863a (MZ7KM) differ only in the fourth, and the PM1643 and PM1643a share MZILT and differ later in the string, as in MZILT3T8HALS against MZILT3T8HBLS for the 3.84TB drives.
OEM builds and model names
Server makers keep Samsung's base number and change the ending. Dell's builds end in D3: -000D3 on the SATA and SAS drives and -00AD3 on newer ones, with -00AD7 for Dell's self-encrypting PM9A3, and the drive itself reports the model without the dash, as in MZ7LH960HAJR0D3. Samsung also sells each drive under a short model name built from the same blocks, such as MZ-7L396000 for the PM893 960GB. The tables list the Samsung, Dell, HPE and Lenovo numbers we could confirm for each drive.

FAQ
My number is not in the table. Do you still buy it?
Often, yes. The tables hold the numbers we could confirm, not everything we buy. Paste the number into the quote form, or photograph the label.
What happens to the data on a drive?
Every drive we buy is erased to NIST 800-88 before it moves on, and the erasure report is yours on request. Drives are graded from their own SMART data; the endurance guide explains what those numbers mean for value.
Does a Dell or HPE build pay less than the Samsung one?
The drive underneath is the same Samsung drive, and we grade it the same way. Send the number from the label, whichever one it is, and the quote names the drive.
Number decoded? The quote form turns it into a firm figure within four business hours. Server lots go through the bulk desk, priced line by line against the same index.
