Micron, Kioxia, and WD Enterprise SSD Part Numbers Decoded
By the SellUsedRAM bench · Reviewed September 28, 2026 · About SellUsedRAM
An enterprise SSD's label carries the maker's part number, and that number holds the model, the capacity, and whether the drive encrypts. This page shows how to read Micron, Kioxia, and WD (HGST) numbers, and lists the 19 drives we buy with every number each one goes by and what it pays today.
Micron: MTFD numbers
Take MTFDDAK1T9TDS-1AW1ZABYY. MTFD marks a Micron flash drive. The next letter is the interface: D is SATA, H is PCIe Gen3, and K is PCIe Gen4. The two letters after it are the form factor: AK is 2.5-inch 7 mm, AL is U.2 15 mm, CC is U.3 15 mm, and CB is U.3 7 mm. Then come the capacity (960 is 960GB, 1T9 is 1.92TB, 3T8 is 3.84TB, 7T6 is 7.68TB), a T for TLC flash, and two letters for the model: DS is the 5300 PRO, GA the 5400 PRO, FR the 7450 PRO, DP the 9300 PRO, and GH the 9400 PRO. The 7300 PRO part numbers in Micron's product brief all carry DF.
After the dash, the first digit is the bill-of-materials revision and the next two characters name the flash chip. Two characters later comes the security option: Z is no encryption, 5 is TCG Opal, and 6 is TCG Enterprise. AB marks a standard build and TA a TAA-compliant one, and YY is the standard customer code; the Micron numbers Lenovo lists for its ThinkSystem drives end in LA instead. So MTFDDAK1T9TDS-1AW1ZABYY is a 5300 PRO 1.92TB SATA drive without encryption.
One trap: the 7450 PRO 7.68TB and the 9400 PRO 7.68TB share their first 11 characters, MTFDKCC7T6T. Only the two model letters, FR or GH, tell them apart.

Kioxia: KCD and KCM numbers
Kioxia's product briefs list four versions of each drive, told apart by the fifth character: 1 is the base model, X adds Sanitize Instant Erase, D is self-encrypting (TCG Opal and Ruby), and F is the FIPS-validated self-encrypting drive. The CD8-R has no FIPS version. The last four characters are the capacity: 960G, 1T92, 3T84, 7T68, 15T3, or 30T7.
The rest is our reading of those briefs rather than a key Kioxia publishes. KCD is the CD series and KCM the CM series, and the digit is the generation. The sixth character is the endurance class: read-intensive drives are L on the CD6-R but R on the CM6-R and CD8-R, and mixed-use drives are V. So KCD61LUL3T84 is a CD6-R 3.84TB and KCM61RUL3T84 a CM6-R 3.84TB.

WD and HGST Ultrastar numbers
An Ultrastar DC SN840 has a model number, such as WUS4BA138DSP3X1, and a separate WD ordering number for each encryption option (0TS1877 for that drive). The last character of the model number is the option: 1 is Secure Erase, 3 Instant Secure Erase, 4 TCG Ruby, and 5 FIPS 140-2. WUS4BA119, WUS4BA138, WUS4BA176, and WUS4BA1A1 are the 1.92, 3.84, 7.68, and 15.36TB drives rated at one drive write per day; WUS4C6416, WUS4C6432, and WUS4C6464 are the 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4TB drives rated at three.
Older HGST drives follow a key printed in HGST's data sheets. In HUSMR7638BDP3Y1, H is HGST, U is Ultrastar, S is standard, MR is mixed use and read intensive, 76 is the largest capacity in the series (7.6TB), 38 is this drive's capacity, B is the second generation, D is the U.2 form factor, P3 is PCIe 3.0, Y is one drive write per day (0 would be three), and 1 marks NVMe. That drive is the Ultrastar SN200 3.84TB, ordering number 0TS1356.

Lenovo option numbers
Lenovo sells many of these drives as ThinkSystem options with numbers beginning 4XB7A. The tables above include the ones Lenovo's product guides tie to each drive.
Every number here was checked against the maker's own documentation, or against two independent listings that agree. Payouts are read from the Payout Index when the page loads.
FAQ
My number is not in the table. Do you still buy the drive?
Often, yes. The tables hold the numbers we could confirm, not everything we buy. Paste the number into the quote form, or photograph the label.
How is a used drive graded?
From its own SMART data on our bench: life remaining, reallocated sectors, and power-on hours. The endurance guide explains what those numbers mean for value.
What happens to the data?
Every drive we buy is erased to NIST 800-88 before it moves on, and the erasure report is yours on request.
Can one lot mix drive makers?
Yes. Mixed makers, capacities, and interfaces are fine. Send one list and we price every line.
Number decoded? The quote form turns it into a firm figure within four business hours. Server lots go through the bulk desk, priced line by line against the same index.
